Corneal debridement refers to the process of smoothing the skin of the cornea if it hangs loose as a result of a disease. Common diseases treated by debridement include Recurrent Erosion Syndrome, Anterior basement membrane dystrophy and herpes simplex virus. However, the skin of the cornea might just become loose due to anterior opacities, which may not necessarily involve deeper layers of the cornea.
Sloughing off, of the cells in the eye can have an adverse effect on the quality of life of the patient. This results in dryness of the eye, pain in the area, irritation and irregular astigmatism. The dry skin of the eyelid may rub against the loose skin of the cornea while sleeping, resulting in a scratch on the cornea. The patient, therefore, tends to wake up with a sharp pain in their eyes. This breakdown of the skin in the cornea may be recurring and may occur every night in the patient.
Another effect of Anterior Basement Membrane Dystrophy is the irregularity over the pupil, called the “black dot”. This results in a dull quality of vision, with the blurriness increasing as the eye gets drier. Therefore, Corneal Debridement surgery in Navi Mumbai becomes necessary for the comfort of the patient.
The process of Corneal Epithelial Debridement is carried out using a special tool, called a Diamond Burr. Therefore, it is also called diamond burr polishing. The process does not usually require admittance into the Operation Theatre; most doctors perform it at their office itself. The entire process usually lasts around five to ten minutes- such is its quickness.
The eye is made numb, using anaesthetic eye drops, so that you do not feel any pain or discomfort during the polishing process. After the eye is numb, eyelid holders are provided so that the patient does not blink in reflex action while the doctor performs the surgery. The loose skin of the cornea is then removed using a cotton swab. After that, the diamond burr is used to rub the cornea, so that the skin under the area of loose skin gets polished. This process takes around a minute to get completed, and the patient will feel no discomfort during it.
The main advantage of polishing the cornea is that it reduces the chance of loose skin occurring again, as the new corneal skin grows back into place firmly, unlike loose skin. The success rate of this process is at least 85%, if only higher.
The process is an outpatient one, so the patient is not required to stay overnight at the hospital. The patient is usually given a special contact lens, which is to be worn till your next visit to the hospital. This helps reduce the discomfort at the site. As with any surgery, there is a standing risk of infection after the process; the patient is given eye drops to prevent infection occurring at the site. Normal vision is restored within a couple of days after the surgery. The benefits of the acratched eye treatment include improved vision and reduction in the level of eye pain and discomfort.
