Dealing With Back Pain? Know When It’s the Right Time to See a Doctor

by Sara T. Loving

If you’re currently dealing with major back pain, you may be trying to get relief at home by using different over the counter products, including heat patches, wraps, and ibuprofen. Many of the products are affordable and work well. While these over the counter products can truly provide such a significant amount of relief to those suffering from back pain, there are times when you may need to visit with your physician to find out the exact cause of your back pain because it’s simply not getting any better for you.

It’s common for people to experience some type of back pain throughout life, especially if they’ve strained their backs by doing heavy lifting or sitting in the same position for a long time. It can happen at random and unexpected moments. However, back pain could be an actual sign of several other health problems that are a bit more severe. If the pain isn’t going away or the pain is starting to get a lot worse and you’re not sure what is causing it, you’ll need to see your physician to talk about the pain and undergo an evaluation.

You may need to undergo a series of tests and scans. These scans will help your doctor figuring out the underlying cause of the pain and other symptoms you’re currently experiencing.

The Pain Simply Won’t Go Away

If your pain isn’t going away despite using different over the counter products for relief, you’re probably wondering what is going on with your body. The best way for you to figure out what is going on is to visit with your physician. Mild back pain is often caused by some sort of strain and it will usually go away on its own within a few hours or even a few days. When it’s not going away and it’s becoming more of a problem for you, it’s time to speak with the doctor because your back pain could be a sign of inflammation, infections, or even some sort of neurological issues.

There is even a possibility that a tumor may be growing around your spine. You shouldn’t allow the thought of a tumor growing around the spine to get in the way of you getting checked out because it’s important for you to know if something serious is going on with your body or not. If it’s something serious and it’s caught a lot earlier on, different methods of treatment may be a lot more effective and could potentially save your life from something that may have been life-threatening.

You’re Experiencing a Fever With the Back Pain

When your back pain is accompanied by a fever that doesn’t go away despite taking medication and staying hydrated, you’ll need to get checked out. The combination of back pain and a fever may be a sign of a serious infection or abscess. Vertebral infections are often caused by a buildup of bacteria and can cause excruciating pain. If they’re not taken care of properly, they could cause numerous uncomfortable side effects, including fever, chills, vomiting, and severe inflammation.

These infections are serious and must be handled properly by a trained and experienced medical professional. Antibiotics are often prescribed to treat and clear the infection. However, if the antibiotics don’t work or aren’t as effective because the patient waited too long to seek treatment for the infection, a surgery may be necessary. The surgery typically takes place as a way of controlling the infection and reducing the pain and discomfort an individual is experiencing because of the infection they’ve developed.

You’re Feeling Numb

If your back hurts and it’s feeling numb, there is a possibility you’re suffering from a herniated disc. The disc pushes down on the nerves, leading to the serious pain and numbing sensation you’re experiencing. Sometimes a herniated disc can happen, and an individual might not realize it because they don’t experience any symptoms. However, if you’re experiencing numbness and pain, you may need to seek treatment for your herniated disc.

The method of treatment for herniated discs varies. Steroid injections may be one of the best ways to ease the pain you’re feeling each day. If the steroid injections aren’t as effective, a surgery may be needed. The only way to know which method of treatment would work best for you would be to visit the physician, find out if you’re dealing with a herniated disc in the first place, and then discuss the treatment options based on the severity of the pain you’re feeling.

The Pain is Becoming More Severe

If the pain in your back is getting even worse instead of getting any better, you’ll need to talk to your physician because severe back pain can be a sign of several serious medical issues. Some of these different medical issues include spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, and degenerative disc disease. It may be necessary for you to undergo different types of testing to find out the underlying cause of the back pain so that you can focus on treating the pain the right way with the right method of treatment.

When you’re dealing with back pain, you may think that it’s not that serious. If you don’t think it’s serious enough, you might not have visited your physician to talk about the pain but speaking with a medical professional is in your best interest if the pain is getting worse or if you’re experiencing some additional side effects, such as fevers and numbing sensations. These different symptoms are often some of the most common telltale signs of health conditions that are far more severe.

Seeking help now is the best way to get relief. If you find out what is causing your pain, you can talk to your doctor about following through with the right method of treatment, whether it includes taking antibiotics, getting steroid injections, an anti-inflammatory or even undergoing a surgery. The right method of treatment could leave you feeling much better, reducing a lot of the unwanted pain you’ve been silently dealing with for quite some time.
